Taking Medication

Over-the-counter and prescription medications can be helpful in managing arthritis symptoms. Below are some examples. Talk to your doctor to find out what might be right for you.

Over-the-Counter Medications

NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

NSAIDs can be used to help manage arthritis pain and inflammation.

Acetaminophen

Acetaminophen doesn’t reduce inflammation, but it can help relieve arthritis pain.

Topical pain-relieving creams, rubs, and sprays

Some topical medications can help relieve pain when applied to the skin.

Prescription Medications

NonSteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)

Your doctor may prescribe NSAIDs at a higher dose. Prescription NSAIDs can be effective in managing arthritis pain and inflammation.

Acetaminophen

Your doctor may prescribe acetaminophen at a higher dose. Acetaminophen doesn’t reduce inflammation, but it can help relieve arthritis pain.

Narcotic Painkillers

Narcotics do not reduce inflammation, but they can be effective in relieving arthritis pain. They work by targeting pain receptors on nerve cells.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids, also commonly referred to as steroids, are anti-inflammatory agents that can be effective in reducing osteoarthritis pain. They are applied through injection to the joint that is affected.

Hyaluronic Acid Substitutes

Another type of injection treatment, Hyaluronic Acid Substitutes are used to treat osteoarthritis of the knee.

Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs)

Specific to rheumatoid arthritis, DMARDs may slow disease progression as well as reduce signs and symptoms. People suffering from rheumatoid arthritis are commonly prescribed DMARDs.

Important Safety Information

All prescription NSAIDs, like CELEBREX, ibuprofen, naproxen, and meloxicam have the same cardiovascular warning. They may all increase the chance of heart attack or stroke that can lead to death. This chance increases if you have heart disease or risk factors for it, such as high blood pressure or when NSAIDs are taken for long periods.

CELEBREX should not be used right before or after certain heart surgeries.

Serious skin reactions, or stomach and intestine problems such as bleeding and ulcers, can occur without warning and may cause death. Patients taking aspirin and the elderly are at increased risk for stomach bleeding and ulcers.

Tell your doctor if you have:
* A history of ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines
* High blood pressure or heart failure
* Kidney or liver problems

CELEBREX should not be taken in late pregnancy.

Do not take CELEBREX if you have bleeding in the stomach or intestine, or you’ve had an asthma attack, hives, or other allergic reactions to aspirin, any other NSAID medicine or certain drugs called sulfonamides.

Life threatening allergic reactions can occur with CELEBREX. Get help right away if you’ve had swelling of the face or throat or trouble breathing.

Prescription CELEBREX should be used exactly as prescribed at the lowest dose possible and for the shortest time needed.
